Which Laser Resurfacing Treatment Is Right For You?

Written By: AIREM EDITOR

You wear sunscreen. You use Vitamin C. You are even a regular with azelaic acid. But you still have stubborn dark spots that just won’t go away. Skin discoloration, also referred to as pigmentation, is very common and can be formed over time from sun damage, aging or even acne. If you hit a wall in treating your dark spots with topicals, laser skin resurfacing might be the treatment you need to finally achieve an even, radiant complexion.

WHAT IS A LASER RESURFACING TREATMENT?

Laser skin resurfacing is a facial rejuvenation treatment that uses state-of-the-art laser technology to improve the skin’s appearance by reducing wrinkles, age spots, sun spots, acne scarring, and oth- er hyperpigmentation as well as tightening the skin and balancing uneven tone.

Before you dive down the Google rabbit hole, read our 411 to laser skin surfacing and which laser resurfacing treatment is right for you.

But, first...

TYPES OF LASER SKIN RESURFACING

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF LASER RESURFACING TECHNOLOGY: ABLATIVE AND NON-ABLATIVE.

Ablative laser resurfacing is typically more invasive as it removes the top layer of the skin. Dramatic improvements can generally be seen after a single treatment, but most individuals need on average one to two weeks or more of recovery time to heal.

On the other hand, non-ablative laser resurfacing works by heating the underlying skin - without harming the skin surface - in order to trigger your body to naturally produce new collagen. Non-ablative laser resurfacing is best at improving skin texture and tone. In some cases they may also be used to improve the appearance of fine lines, mild wrinkles and pigmentation as well.

Several treatments are usually needed to see significant results, but the recovery process is generally mild. Other than some redness or swelling, most people can resume normal routines right away.

AIREM LASER RESURFACING TREATMENTS

AIREM offers several laser skin resurfacing treatments: ClariPore, SkinEven, FadeAway, LaserTone IPL and LaserTone Erbium. Learn more about what makes each of these laser resurfacing treatments unique.

CLARIPORE

Looking to tighten and brighten your complexion for perfectly even skin tone? Then the Clari- Pore treatment is the one for you! Using gentle fractional laser resurfacing technology, this gentle non-ablative treatment addresses and prevents textural changes and early signs of aging. Nano- meter wavelengths heat up the targeted tissue to create millions of microscopic treatment zones in the upper layers of the skin. This process stimulates the body’s collagen production to replace damaged skin with healthy tissue, and ultimately improving skin tone and texture.

THE CLARIPORE TREATMENT IS IDEAL FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO:
• Prevent and/or reduce early signs of aging (such as fine lines and wrinkles)
• Diminish superficial dark spots
• Improve skin texture and tone
• Reduce pore size
• Enhance clarity, vibrancy and radiance of the complexion

Mild redness may appear after treatment but will diminish within several days. Multiple treatments are recommended to achieve optimal results. While results can be seen within 3-4 days following treatment, final results will gradually emerge during the next 3 weeks and last for up to several months to years. No down time required.

SKINEVEN

If you’re interested in kicking stubborn melasma and fine lines to the curb then the SkinEven treat- ment is your perfect match! Utilizing gentle fractional laser resurfacing technology, SkinEven im- proves skin tone and texture by specifically targeting discoloration issues such as sun spots, hyper- pigmentation and melasma, with the added benefit of enhancing your skin’s permeability of skin care products. By creating microscopic treatment zones through nanometer wavelengths, your skin stimulates the body’s collagen production to replace damaged skin with a more youthful dermal layer for rejuvenation and pigmentation.

THE SKINEVEN TREATMENT IS IDEAL FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO:
• Reduce moderate signs of aging (such as fine lines and wrinkles)
• Diminish stubborn dark spots, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and melasma
• Improve skin texture and tone
• Reduce pore size
• Enhance clarity, vibrancy and radiance of the complexion

Mild redness and inflammation may occur after treatment but will diminish within a few hours. For best results, a series of 4-6 treatments is recommended. While results can be seen within 24 hours following treatment, final results will gradually emerge during the next 7 days and last for up to sev- eral months to years. No down time required.

FADEAWAY

For those wanting an intense transformation and don’t mind recovery times of one to two weeks, the FadeAway treatment will be your new obsession for eliminating deeply embedded skin dis- coloration to smoothening wrinkles and fine lines. The FadeAway treatment uses picosecond laser technology with a high power laser beam and ultra-short pulses to transform your skin from the inside out. The ultra-short pulses lead to a photoacoustic effect rather than a photothermal (or heat) approach as heating the skin can lead to unwanted side effects, such as downtime and increased pigmentation in certain skin types.. This advanced picosecond laser utilizes different handpieces and laser wavelengths to target pigment in the deeper layers of skin. This treatment can be used to treat one spot, one area or the full face. As the pico laser breaks down the pigmentation into small- er pieces, it also creates room for new collagen and elastin growth, resulting in brighter, firmer and more youthful-looking skin.

THE FADEAWAY TREATMENT IS IDEAL FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO:
• Diminish deeply embedded dark spots, and hyperpigmentation
• Reduce moderate signs of aging (such as fine lines and wrinkles)
• Stimulate collagen and elastin production
• Improve skin texture and tone
• Reduce pore size
• Enhance clarity, vibrancy and radiance of the complexion

Mild redness and inflammation may occur after treatment but will diminish within a few hours. Initial darkening of treated spots will occur and should subside within 7 days. This is a normal result of pigment changes. For best results, a series of 3-6 treatments is recommended. Results can be seen within 1-2 weeks following treatment and last for up to several months to years. There is mild to moderate down time depending on the extent of treatment.

ENHANCE AND ACCELERATE RESULTS WITH EXOSOME SKINBOOSTERS

"You can think of exosomes as messengers sending signals to unhealthy cells, triggering them to regenerate." In other words, exosomes prompt the body's natural healing process.

Exosome therapy involves the application of topical exosomes (in the form of what looks and feels like a serum or gel) after treatments like resurfacing lasers or microneedling.

As we get older, our skin cells start to atrophy, and our bodies produce fewer exosomes — similar to how we experience a decrease in collagen production. This leads to sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles. Exosome therapy allows new exosomes to swoop in to help wake up inactive skin cells and older exosomes so they can repair, strengthen, and rejuvenate skin. (Exosome Therapy Is Dermatologists' New Favorite Skin-Rejuvenation Treatment, Allure.com)

When pairing Exosome Therapy with laser rejuvenation, it not only speeds up recovery but enhances the overall outcome by essentially "turbo charging" the ability of your skin cells to regenerate brand new skin cells.

EXOSOMES 101:

• Exosomes are derived from human stem cells and contain important components, such as DNA, RNA, amino acids, peptides, growth factors and nutrients, that help the body heal.
• Exosomes help to treat an endless list of concerns, including hyperpigmentation, elasticity, skin tone, skin texture, pore size, fine lines and wrinkles and skin dehydration.
• They stimulate collagen production (up to 6 times) and elastin levels (up to 300%)¹.
• No blood draw is required. Exosomes are applied as a topical gel post treatment.

COMMON FAQS ABOUT LASER SKIN RESURFACING

What is laser skin resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is a facial rejuvenation treatment that uses state-of-the-art laser technology to improve the skin’s appearance by reducing wrinkles, age spots, sun spots, acne scarring, and oth- er hyperpigmentation as well as tightening and balancing skin tone.

Is laser skin resurfacing safe?
Yes, the FDA has approved both the fractional and picosecond laser devices. AIREM’s board-certi- fied facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Eunice Park, has extensive experience using these lasers and will use her expertise to customize your treatment so it is safe and effective.

Is laser treatment for acne safe?
Yes! Laser skin resurfacing for acne scars is a safe, technologically advanced means of improving the appearance of your skin. Medical-grade, FDA approved light technology is used to diminish scars and stimulate collagen for a smoother appearance. Several sessions may be required to fully diminish the scars and pigmentation.

How effective is laser skin resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is effective in diminishing dark spots, balancing skin tone and reducing the signs of aging, especially with multiple treatment sessions. Laser skin resurfacing does not pre- vent new or previous dark spots, wrinkles or uneven skin tone from recurring as aging, genetics, sun damage, acne and other factors can have an effect on the skin.

Am I a good candidate for laser resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is a good option for men and women that are seeing signs of aging, have un- even skin tone and are looking to refresh their appearance.. This treatment is appropriate for most skin tones.

What are the side effects of laser resurfacing?
Side effects will depend on the type, depth and intensity of laser treatment. SkinEven and Claripore are two of AIREM’s most popular non-ablative laser resurfacing treatment with minimal downtime.

Does the skin darken after laser treatment?
In rare cases, laser skin resurfacing can cause post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH). PIH can occur in Asian, Hispanic and African American individuals who have Fitzpatrick skin types III or greater as well as those with very sensitive skin. During your consultation, Dr. Park will address any concerns you may have including how to treat PIH if you happen to experience this condition.

What is the laser resurfacing recovery time?
The recovery time varies from a few days to one to 2 weeks depending on the type, depth and in- tensity of laser treatment. None of the laser skin resurfacing treatments that AIREM offers require any down time.

How do I take care of my skin after laser resurfacing?
We recommend gentle skin care products and applying sunscreen for the first few weeks to pre- vent possible damage to the treated areas. AIREM formulated the Recovery Ritual to be used after laser and aesthetic treatments.

How long does laser resurfacing last?
Laser treatments are usually performed on a yearly basis to maintain best results. Sun damage, wrinkles and pigmentation continue to affect our skin. Maintenance is key to a healthy and luminous complexion.

How much is laser resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing costs are approximately $550 to $1000 per session. At AIREM, we offer a laser resurfacing package with multiple sessions at a competitive rate.

When should I have laser skin resurfacing?
Autumn is typically considered “laser” season. The fall and winter months are the best time to un- dergo a laser skin resurfacing procedure in order to minimize sun exposure post-procedure. During the fall and winter months daytime hours are shorter and we spend more time indoors during the healing period
