Dr. Shirley Hu is a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and visual artist who credits her love of the fine arts as the spark for her career. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture and Chemistry from Dartmouth College and received her Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College, finishing second in her class. Dr. Hu then completed a five-year Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery residency at Mount Sinai in New York, NY. Her training culminated with a highly prestigious fellowship in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery with Dr. Stephen W. Perkins in Indianapolis, IN. As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Hu focuses exclusively on the region of the face and neck, giving her an unparalleled level of expertise in this area. Dr. Hu will begin your consultation by listening to your concerns about your eyes and discussing the results you would like to achieve.
She always takes care to thoroughly explain the different layers of the eyelids and how to implement the desired changes using specific surgical techniques.
Full face examination and imaging
Next, Dr. Hu will take a full health history and perform a complete examination of your face with a specific focus on the eyes and the area surrounding them. With this information, Dr. Hu will create a tailored plan to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. In addition to a upper and/or lower eyelid lift, Dr. Hu may recommend adjunct procedures such as fat grafting to restore balance and volume to the under-eye region, brow rejuvenation to elevate an aging brow, or laser resurfacing to treat the stubborn, deeper wrinkles of the crow’s feet.

Blepharoplasty is performed on-site in a state-of-the-art private operating suite at AIREM. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is commonly performed under local anesthetic only. For lower eyelid blepharoplasty, sedation is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Each procedure takes around 45 minutes. Following this, you will recover in a private room. Once you are awake enough, a family member or friend can escort you from the facility back home. For the first 24 hours following surgery, it is recommended that someone be available to take care of you.
